Social media tops the list of Lenten forfeits

Social media is the most popular thing to give up for this Lent with a number of people announcing an end to their online activity for the next few weeks.

This is according to Open Bible, a website that tracks what Twitter users say they're giving up for lent.

Chocolate, meat, alcohol, coffee and men all feature in the top 10.

Today, Ash Wednesday, signifies the start of Lent, with a church in Glenamaddy in Galway offering drive-thru ashes for its parishioners.

A number of people in Dublin spoke about what they are giving up for Lent this year.

"Oh the usual," one woman said "Chocolate, but we'll see how it goes."

Another man said that he would "get off" cigarettes while another man said he "might give up the drink for a while".

"All the sweets and all the rubbish," another woman said.
