Search begins for Ireland's next top country music star

Music legends Margo O'Donnell and Nathan Carter are searching for Ireland's next country star.

The pair were in Mullingar, Co Westmeath today auditioning the finalists of the Late Late Show's 'Search for A Country Star' competition in The Greville Arms.

The winner will duet with Nathan on the biggest country music night on Irish television, which will air on May 3.

Nathan said it's an opportunity he would have jumped at when he was starting out.

"It took me five years to get on the Late Late," he said.

"To be fair whoever wins this is getting a really good opportunity to walk straight on and do a duet. It's incredible."

Nathan also revealed that the winner will get to record an EP.

He said modern country music has evolved and incorporated elements from other music genres.

The current crop of country music is very much rock, pop-infused. It generally has lyrics that are very much country associated but mightn't sound country traditionally.

Margo said she is happy to support up-and-coming performers.

"We need to give a chance to the young folk," Margo told Ryan Tubridy on RTÉ Radio 1 during a broadcast from outside the Greville Arms today.

The winner will be revealed on the Late Late Show Country Special on Friday, May 3.
