Racing for glory: Galway Hooker racing returns to TG4

Galway Hooker racing returns to TG4 with intense local rivalry playing out on 'Bádóirí'.

In the show's second series, eight families battle it out and raise their rust-red calico sails among the rocky inlets west of Galway Bay.

Sailing Ireland's oldest and most native boats, the competitors in the Galway Hooker Association racing league welcome a new boat and a new family, 'The Truelight'.

Producer and director of Bádóirí, Donncha Mac Con Iomaire said there is deep tradition linking the past and present racing families.

"There are few societies in the world where a 200 year old boat is the epicentre of the same family for 2 centuries.

"The maritime community of Connemara never underestimates the Atlantic, and the unity of their families cannot afford to succumb to failure at sea.

"This ancient world that works hard and plays hard is what is still most genuine culture of Ireland."

Once the workhorses of the west coast, the distinctive sails of the Galway Hookers now race for glory throughout the summer months.

Season one followed several families as they battled one another for the coveted prize of All-Ireland champions.

Season two delves deeper into sailing families lives and histories.

'Bádóirí' will air on TG4 on Thursday, March 5 at 8pm.
