There is a stereotypical assumption that sewing is for women, and women only.
We salute this particular man on 'International Men's Day' for breaking such gender stereotypes or, depending on how you interpret this story, putting his foot in it.
And boy did Mike really put his foot in it last week when he attempted to repair his torn jeans.
After getting them caught on the door handle the Leixlip man decided to take matters into his own hands and after briefly consulting his wife, he made a beeline for the sewing box.
"I did the manly thing of choosing the largest sewing needle in the box," he said. (Oh the irony)
After impressing himself with his newly found skill Mike stuck the needle into a carpet on which he was sitting.
The phone interrupted his further reflection of his handy work. Jumping up to answer it he forgot about the needle post he had created and put the full force of his weight onto the sharp object.
"I heard a crack and hopped around the room with choice language in agony, " he said.
"When my head cleared I still hadn't realised I'd stepped on it until I saw half a needle bent in half on floor".
Unable to find the remainder of the needle on the floor, Mike powered through the pain and went spinning and swimming.
When he realised the swelling was probably a sign of something more sinister he went to the doctor.
After a strong does of antibiotics, being referred to the hospital for an X Ray, being sent to a nurse with a magnet and a consultation with an orthopaedic doctor the remainder of the needle was removed from Mike's big toe.
"Motto of the story, men should not be allowed to sew," said Mike.
Mike we salute you on International Men's Day for putting your foot in it and also for sewing!
