A man who accidentally registered to the wrong tournament at the prestigious World Series of Poker event ended up taking the top prize of $81,314.
Christian Pham thought he had registered for the $1,500 Texas Hold 'Em game - in which players are dealt two cards each. But when he sat down at his table last week, five cards were placed into his hand.
It was only then that Pham discovered he had accidentally registered for the no-limit deuce-seven lowball - a game he had never played (or heard of) before.
"When I got to the table, and when I got dealt five cards, I realized that something was wrong," he told PokerNews.com. "I said, 'Oh my god!' because in Minnesota they don't have this game."
"This was the first time I played this game, but I tried to learn the game at the table from the people at the table."
Despite never having played the game, Pham fought off 217 other entrants to take the top spot.
Pham told the Poker News site that he had to have the hands explained to him by the player next to him, and folded the first seven before he picked up the basic rules.
He became chip leader on the first day of the two-day tournament when he called in a bluff worth 100,000 chips.
"I didn't understand much of the game, but enough, and in the future for sure I will register for this game. I love it!" he said.
