India Brainard, who has Cerebral Palsy, got a rather special cross-country visit from her boyfriend after spending 57 days in hospital.
India, 15, underwent a painful dual hip replacement and femur re-alignment surgery earlier this year and has had to spend much longer in a Boston hospital then was expected after the procedure.
In need of having her spirits lifted India, whose family come from New Mexico, got a fantastic surprise thanks to her dad Donnie.
Donnie, who maintains a blog on his life with India, managed to arrange for her boyfriend Daniel to travel thousands of miles across the States to see her.
It is plain to see the sheer joy on the teenager’s face as she sees her beau, described by Donnie as “equally disabled”.
Donnie describes the delight he felt to discover his daughter had a boyfriend in his writings:
“I've watched my oldest daughter go through the unimaginable. Recently I was put through another intense situation with my child that I wasn't prepared for. I went to pick my oldest daughter up from school a bit early on her last day. I arrived knowing she had a crush on a boy who is equally disabled.
“She’s known him since they were young and he’s one of the first names she mentions in the morning as we prepare her for school as she looks for confirmation that she gets to see him each day," said Donnie.
“I didn't fully understand the bond until India’s last day of school and it almost brought me to my knees.
“As I walked into my child's classroom, I found her wheelchair that she can maneuver positioned next to her boyfriend’s. They were holding each other and clearly enjoying every moment; it was beautiful beyond words,” added the proud father.
India is now recovering in a New Mexico hospital closer to her family and of course Daniel.
