Former Ballybrack player whose death was faked finds new club in Galway

The soccer player who made global headlines after his death was incorrectly reported in communications from his Dublin football club has found a new team to play with.

In November, in communications with the Leinster Senior League, a Ballybrack FC representative claimed that Fernando LaFuente had died. The false statement was made in a bid to get out of playing a game against Arklow Town.

At the time (November 28) Ballybrack FC said it had contacted the player to confirm his wellbeing, and described the incident as a “grave and unacceptable mistake”. The club added the person who had begun the false story by communicating it to the to the Leinster Senior League had been relieved of all footballing duties.

The lie escalated so much that players at other games in the league held a minute's silence and wore black armbands and a death notice was published in newspapers.

But LaFuente was able to quash the rumour by confirming that he was in fact alive and well, and said he couldn't help but be amused by the incident.

He is now alive and kicking with new Galway club Colga FC.
