The bra has been through many phases over the years, from the fashion history of the bra, from its free-the-corset beginnings in the Victorian age, to the feminist bra-burning of the 1960s, to 21st century Victoria’s Secret Angels - to these days, found shoved to the back on a press somewhere.
Now one Cork woman is appealing to source those unwanted bras new or used for a great cause, in association with the Niall Mellon trust.
Anne Marie Kingston, of White Sage Decluttering, is collecting the garments for the impoverished women of South Africa, where underwear is considered a luxury item.
The professional declutterer, who was inspired by a Niall Mellon volunteer’s Facebook post, decided to put a call out on her business page where she was overwhelmed by the response.
Women from the four corners of Ireland have responded sending parcels of bras to West Cork.
There are currently four drop-off points:
Each point is accepting garments until December 31.
