A Friends-inspired cookbook is coming – and yes, there’s beef trifle

When you think of the TV show Friends, plenty of things come to mind: 10 seasons of laughs, the upcoming reunion, maybe the iconic Rachel haircut.

Food might not be top of the list, but there are many memorable dishes from the show’s run between 1994 and 2004.

That’s why a new official Friends cookbook is in the works, which might help fill the void as the reunion has been postponed.

The new book – which will be published on September 22, contains over 70 recipes inspired by the show. Written by Amanda Yee, a Chinese, Norwegian, and African-American chef, it is called Friends: The Official Cookbook.

So what recipes can we expect? After all, Monica Geller – played by Courteney Cox – is a chef on the show, so at least one of the characters has some cooking know how.

Here’s what to expect…

Monica’s Friendsgiving Feast

We can only imagine this is a Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings.

There are multiple Friends episodes dedicated to Thanksgiving, and for most of them Monica cooks up a storm of roast turkey, yams, many different types of mashed potatos, various pies, and more.

Rachel’s Trifle

Rachel’s infamous trifle also appears in a Thanksgiving episode, but it’s not quite as palatable as Monica’s food.

Monica tasks Rachel with making the dessert, but things go wrong when Rachel’s cookbook has pages accidentally stuck together and she combines the recipes for English trifle and shepherd’s pie.

The result is a dish with layers of ladyfingers, jam, custard, raspberries, beef with peas and onions, bananas and whipped cream.

Of course, Rachel’s trifle went down just as well as you would expect a dish combining custard and ground beef – with the exception of Joey, who loved it.

If you have a Joey in your friendship group, maybe you’d like to give the recipe a go?

Just for Joey Fries

Monica might be the chef of the show, but Joey is undoubtedly the food lover.

He notoriously doesn’t share food – particularly fries – so we imagine this dish is chips just for one.

Chandler’s “Milk You Can Chew”

At one point in the show, Chandler decides he wants to go into advertising, and he makes up all kinds of slogans to show off his talent.

He refers to cheese as “milk you can chew” – and while it doesn’t sound the most appetising of things, who doesn’t love a cheese-based recipe?

Phoebe’s Grandmother’s Cookies

The cookbook has recipes for starters, mains and desserts, and this is one of the sweet treats.

It’s inspired by the episode where Monica tries to figure out the secret recipe for Phoebe’s grandma’s chocolate chip cookies.

After making batches and batches of them, it turns out the recipe was just Nestlé’s Toll House cookies and not a secret at all.

If you like a classic chocolate chip cookie, this is one for you.

The Moist Maker

This is Ross’s favourite post-Thanksgiving sandwich, made by sister Monica.

It’s made using leftovers from the meal, so it’s basically an amped-up turkey sandwich – and the secret is an extra slice of gravy-soaked bread in the middle.
