6 fashion bloggers over 40 you need to be following on Instagram

Fashion bloggers are some of the most popular accounts on Instagram, with millions of people posting pictures of their #OOTD (outfit of the day, for those who aren’t quite up to date with social media-speak).

However, there’s no denying that most of these influencers are of a certain age – and by that we mean generally super young. Unfortunately, this means that we don’t get to see a whole lot of age diversity, which just plays into the tired and damaging idea that women have an expiry date.

It’s not like there aren’t a whole lot of older women who are bringing their fashion A game on Instagram – many are well worth a follow if you’re looking for inspiration or just want a bit of variety on your feed. Yes, they’re over 40, but that doesn’t have to restrict how they dress at all.

1. Judith Boyd

For those interested in an experimental kind of fashion blogger, look no further than Judith Boyd of Style Crone. The 75-year-old has a penchant for hats, saying: “I love to support artists who create wearable art.”

Fashion is a form of therapy for Boyd. She says: “If I have an event coming up, I will have a chosen piece available to view in advance to stimulate my creativity. It’s a mindful process, very healing, and an artful exercise in self expression. Some people paint, sculpt, garden, or cook; my artistic outlet and self expression is through style.”

Boyd’s is style with a conscience. She believes in being as sustainable as possible and tries to buy pre-loved clothes. Age has changed her style, but not in the sense of feeling she needs to “dress appropriately” (whatever that means). Boyd says: “My self expression changes as I grow. I wear what I love and don’t focus on fashion trends.”

Yep, I’m back. Longest break from Insta EVER! After we moved house last month I really felt like taking a rest from social media - it just lasted a whole lot longer than I intended. A bit like taking the summer off, if you like! But after the stress of buying and selling a house and then the actual move itself (plus still living with boxes while we wait for all our storage, shed and loftboarding to be delivered), we’re absolutely exhausted. However the move was the best thing we ever did and we couldn’t be happier (Riley loves his new garden and regularly rolls around on the grass)! It’ll be many weeks before the house is sorted enough to photograph, but I’ll blog about it as soon as it’s photoworthy. Meantime - here’s the red ombré dress I wore on my birthday: a joyous riot of colour ❤️. Thanks to all of you that visited the blog in the meantime, at least I just about kept that going! • • • • #summerdressing #over40fashionblogger #40plusblogger #midlifefashion #midlifeblogger #over40fashion #over40style #iwillwearwhatilike

Summers has called her Instagram account “Not Dressed As Lamb,” and that gives you a taste of what you’ll get on there. The 45-year-old is staunchly against “age appropriateness”,  showing that women don’t have to conform to society’s sartorial expectations – in fact, Summers champions the hashtag #iwillwearwhatilike.

I haven’t featured a heavy dose of leopard print on the blog or the ‘gram for ages... hands up who thinks leopard and stripes were made for each other? 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏽‍♀️🙋🏾‍♀️🙋🏿‍♀️ • The dress is a new purchase from @newlook, the clutch was kindly gifted by @jaegerofficial and the belt is old (who knows where from?)! I’ve linked to the dress, leopard alternatives and the RED shoes worn with this outfit on the blog, which I’m sure you knew already... Well waddya waitin’ for?! 😉 (if you’re quick enough you could check out my Stories where you’ll find a direct link to the post!) • • • • #over40fashionblogger #40plusblogger #over40blogger #dressfun #40plusfashion #fashionandstyle #over40 #fortyandfabulous #over40andfabulous #fashionandlifestyle #iwillwearwhatilike #over40style #over40fashion #ss18fashion #over40fashion #treschic #patternmix #patternmixing #waystowear #loudpattern #mixedpatterns #rulebreaker #styledbyme #ss18trends #greatstyle #40plus

So what will you find on her Instagram account? Bright colours, fun patterns and a lot of vintage gems. She shows you don’t have to stop having fun with fashion when you hit 40 whilst still being sophisticated – plus there are plenty of bonus pictures of her cute dog.

Here I am prancing about on Boxing Day in my faaaaaaaaabulous orange floral @mango jumpsuit - bring on the florals in winter, I say! (It’s on sale right now, see my Stories for a link) • And I get asked a lot about surely being cold in this sort of outfit: It was worn indoors, I was only cold when we took photos (though I’ve taken photos in far less and in MUCH colder conditions)! It was reasonably mild outside (about 8C), but with central heating, lots of people and cooking we were all boiling and had to open windows in the end... So no, not in the slightest bit cold!! 🧡🧡🧡 • Oh and you can see more pics on the blog if you so wish - link in profile, you knowwww what to do 😁 • • • • #dressfun #over40fashion #40plusblogger #elegantstyle #over40 #iwillwearwhatilike #fblogger #ootdshare #fashionlook #over40style #outfitideas #winterflorals #floraljumpsuit #over40andfabulous #overforty #currentlywearing #aw17fashion #fashiondiaries #rosegoldombre #over40blogger #fashionblogger #instastyle #over40

Summers has a degree in photography, so you can be sure that all her snaps are on point.

Her confident attitude has helped win her over 53k followers. She tells Vogue: “Once women pass a certain age, they don’t get looked at anymore. I don’t take that into account. I still wear things in a fun way. I don’t have to disappear.”

She’s a striking presence, with a silvery choppy bob and trademark oversized sunglasses. Ghanem’s wardrobe will make you green with envy – full of labels like Gucci, Céline and Balenciaga – with Ghanem working every outfit like she’s on the runway.

4. Lyn Slater

Lyn Slater of Accidental Icon is so established a fashion blogger that she’s actually got a blue tick on Instagram – and you can see why by looking at her snaps.

This sexagenarian is the perfect antidote to the world of fast fashion we see today – Slater believes in items of clothes being forever, rather than just for the short lifespan of a trend.

This makes for interesting outfits, a unique style and photographs that wouldn’t be out of place in the pages of Vogue. Slater has a masters in criminal justice and PhD in social welfare and still teaches at Fordham University – she’s all about intelligent, urban fashion. She tells W Magazine: “I want to engage people of all ages who want to think and talk about fashion, and not just consume it.”

5. Baddie Winkle

Sure, you might not look at Baddie Winkle’s Instagram account for day-to-day sartorial inspiration, but she’s worth a follow purely for how expressive and free she is with her fashion.

Many women who reach the grand old age of 90 (!) don’t tend to wear boob tubes or pleather miniskirts, but no such rules apply to Winkle. Instead, she wears exactly what she wants – and even has a bedazzled cane to make things even swaggier.

Her posts are basically what you expect from a millennial, except Winkle is 90 and really, really, really doesn’t care what other people think.

6. Diane Capozzi

Diane Capozzi of Fashion On The 4th Floor’s Instagram bio says it all: “Fashion transcends all decades! Age should be irrelevant when it comes to simply showcasing your unique style.”

Her account is a ray of sunshine – bright colours, fun silhouettes, and Capozzi’s trademark smile. She’s just impossibly cool.

If you were *actually* looking for style inspo, we’d probably recommend Capozzi over Winkle – but definitely follow both, because you never know what kind of outfit might jump out at you. Some days it’s a teadress and trainers kind of vibe, and others it’s all about tartan minidresses and chains.
