A gunman has walked into a California government building and shot three people, killing two of them.

A third person was killed 10 minutes later at a nearby restaurant.

Authorities are trying to determine whether the same man was responsible for both of the shootings.

No suspects were immediately arrested, Nevada County Sheriff Keith Royal said.

A manhunt is under way in the area around Nevada City, a community of 2,800 in the Sierra Nevada foothills about 50 miles northeast of Sacramento. People were barred from entering or leaving county buildings and area schools.

Two were killed in the social services building. One was wounded and a fourth suffered a broken leg jumping from a window to escape.

About 10 minutes after the first incident, a gunman went into a Lyon's restaurant between Nevada City and Grass Valley and killed the restaurant manager and wounded a 37-year-old woman.

The woman is listed in critical condition at Sutter Roseville Medical Centre with multiple wounds. Another shooting victim was in surgery at Sierra Nevada Hospital in Grass Valley.
