Varadkar: Aer Lingus/DAA strike will affect profits

Transport Minister Leo Varadkar has appealed to DAA and Aer Lingus workers not to go on strike.

SIPTU workers have voted in favour of industrial action in a dispute over the €780m deficit in the pension scheme shared by the two companies.

It is feared a strike could disrupt services during the climax to the Six Nations, and the busy St Patrick's Day travel period.

Minister Varadkar said a disruption to flights might only make the situation worse.

"Industrial action…will not help to achieve a solution," he said. "It will however severely inconvenience passengers (and) adversely impact on the finances of the companies who are being asked to contribute more to solve the problem.

"The strike will obviously make it harder for them to do so as it will have an affect on their profits."
