Ulster Bank has confirmed that any redundancies arising out of the closure of 22 branches will be on a voluntary basis.

Ulster Bank has confirmed that any redundancies arising out of the closure of 22 branches will be on a voluntary basis.

The Irish Bank Officials Association said rural areas had been disproportionately affected after the bank named the affected branches in a move that had been expected.

Eleven of the affected banks are branches and sub-offices in Northern Ireland. The remainder are in counties Cavan, Westmeath, Galway, Offaly, Mayo and Kildare.

Five branches and sub offices in Cavan are affected.

General Secretary of the IBOA union Larry Broderick said: "We welcome the fact that the bank has given a commitment that any closures will be dealt with on a voluntary basis."
