Taoiseach dismisses calls by IMF for 'gradual' public pay adjustment

The Taoiseach has brushed off calls from the IMF, which has warned Ireland about plans to restore public pay.

In its latest report on Ireland, the IMF said the restoration of public pay needed to be "gradual", with increased productivity as part of the deal.

But the Taoiseach said the latest proposals to restore public pay were now agreed and would not be changed any further.

Enda Kenny said he was hopeful the unions would sign up to the Lansdowne Road deal, which will achieve much of what the IMF wants.

"Brendan Howlin has signed off on the public sector pay deal for the next three years and that's been agreed and accepted by government," he said.

"I hope the unions will now move on to accept that also, and give industrial peace - as it were - for the next three years...That's an important element of the growth in our economy."
