Personal confidence high despite economic concerns

Fewer than one person in 10 thinks his or her personal financial circumstances will get worse in 2008, according to new research.

Fewer than one person in 10 thinks his or her personal financial circumstances will get worse in 2008, according to new research.

This is despite the belief of four in 10 people who took part in the survey that the general economic condition of Ireland will get worse in the next year.

According to research from Ipsos MORI, personal confidence has remained largely unchanged in the last four years, while general economic confidence is at its lowest point over the same time period.

"While people always tend to be more confident about their own financial circumstances than they are about the Irish economy generally, this is the widest gap between the two we have seen since the end of 2003 at the height of the Iraq war," said Kieran O’Leary of Ipsos MORI.

"These figures indicate that confidence remains high with many people believing that the speculated economic downturn does not yet affect them."
