Payments made using mobile devices increased by 35%

There is been a threefold increase in the number of Irish consumers using mobile devices to pay for something.

Visa's 2016 Digital Payments study shows those regularly using their phone, tablet or wearable technology for a transaction has jumped from 18 to 53% in a year.

Just last year, 38% of people had never done it and didn't plan to, but that's now dropped to just 12%.

Country Manager at Visa Ireland Philip Konopik, said:“This data is a confirmation that the future of digital payments has arrived, with consumers across the length and breadth of Ireland and Europe embracing a variety of new ways to pay.

"We’ve also seen a new era of wearable payments: smartwatches, wristbands and even clothing. It’s clear that this trend will continue to accelerate, enabling consumers to choose the connected device that fits with their lifestyle.”
