The seasonally adjusted value of exports decreased by €45m (or 1%) for April 2014 in comparison to the previous month, according to preliminary figures from the CSO.
Imports were also down, declining by 11% to €€7.106bn, resulting in a trade surplus of €439m.
Year-on-year exports are down 5%. A drop in the sale of medical and pharmaceutical products internationally is one of the driving factors behind the decrease.
On an overall basis, the EU accounted for €3.75bn, or 53%, of total exports in April 2014.
The USA was the main non-EU destination accounting for 24% (€1.738bn) of total exports in April 2014.
Comparing April 2014 with April 2013, the value of imports rose marginally by €14m to €4.253bn.
The EU accounted for 61% of the value of imports in April 2014, with 29% coming from Great Britain.
The USA (13%) and China (6%) were the main non-EU sources of imports.
