European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science Máire Geoghegan-Quinn has called for a 'yes' vote in the upcoming referendum on the EU Fiscal Compact.
"This vote is as much about signalling that Ireland is back in business at the heart of the eurozone as it is about endorsing the familiar details of good housekeeping and prudent safety nets contained within the text itself," Commissioner Geoghegan-Quinn said.
"In essence, the reason for putting in place this new arrangement is to ensure that what happened before never happens again."
The Commissioner was speaking in Galway as she turned the first sod on the site for a new facility for medical technology firm Medtronic.
She also highlighted Ireland's and in particular Galway's position of leadership in the medical technology sector, which she called a growing and innovative sector in Europe.
