A luxury car dealership is to axe 38 jobs, it was announced today.

Maxwell Motors in Dublin said it was making the redundancies as it was not renewing its BMW franchise, partly because of the gloomy economic outlook.

The Blackrock-based company, which is to lay off more than half of its 65 staff, also blamed conditions set down by the German car company.

Maxwell Motors, which has been operating since the 1930s, has had the franchise for BMW for 19 years.

Charlie Day, Managing Director, said the decision to overhaul the company’s business model was in reponse to more challenging times.

“The hardest decision of all has been the making redundant of over half our current staff,” he said.

“Some of this team have 30 years and more service with the company and it is naturally with great sadness that the board made its decision.”

The firm plans to operate as an independent dealership focusing on supplying premium new and used cars on an independent basis.
