Jobs Minister Richard Bruton will announce plans this morning to tap into the technology 'Big Data' sector.

Aspects of the announcement include an investment in a research centre and a third level education programme.

Data analytics involves converting large amounts of raw data into valuable information using statistical techniques and advanced software.

The sector is growing at about 40% per year. It is estimated that in the next five to 10 years in the US alone, there will be 1.7 million jobs unfilled in the sector.

The Government is launching a €1m investment in a research programme in data analytics with the involvement of companies including eBay, Dell, Adaptive Mobile and HP.

Minister Richard Bruton will also announce a new education programme with diploma and masters programmes to be jointly run by the Irish Management Institute, EMC Corporation and UCC.
