British prime minister Gordon Brown is setting up a National Economic Council to help Britain through the financial crisis by co-ordinating economic policies across his Government, it was announced today.
Chaired by Brown, the council will meet frequently to assess the implications of on-going problems in the financial markets and the impact of global commodity price fluctuations on the UK economy.
Downing Street said it will aim to help people and businesses in the UK deal with economic uncertainties and co-ordinate efforts to help families cope with high food and energy prices.
It will also act as a forum for discussions on how to equip the country for the future by investing in education, skills, science and infrastructure.
