A US company which makes heart monitoring devices is set to create 600 Irish-based jobs after choosing the Mid-West as the location for an €80m facility to make heart valve components.

Edwards Lifesciences said it would construct the new plant at a location in the region — yet to be chosen — to manufacture delivery components for its transcatheter heart valve therapies.

It said the facility will initially support the manufacturing of therapies that enable minimally invasive procedures on patients’ aortic, mitral and tricuspid valves, where open heart surgery would previously have been the norm.

Edwards said it would hire around 60 people this year to work at its initial site located in the Shannon Free Zone, and that it would complete the new manufacturing facility in 2020.

Hiring for the 60 positions in Shannon will begin by June and the firm said it expected to employ 600 people when the new facility is built. The investment, overall, is expected to total around €80m.

The firm’s corporate vice president of global supply chain, Joe Nuzzolese, said the region was chosen mainly for the workforce with experience in medical technology.

IDA chief executive Martin Shanahan said it was an important occasion for foreign direct investment into the regions.

“The company’s arrival further enhances Ireland’s reputation as a preferred location for leading companies in the life sciences sector. Winning investment for regional locations is a key focus and this project is an excellent one to secure for this region,” he said.
