Kim Jong-il 'ate spiders, snakes and hippos'

Former North Korean leader Kim Jong-il used to eat spiders, snakes and hippos, according to new claims.

The late leader's personal sushi chef, Kenji Fujimoto, alleges Jong-il – who died in 2011 – loved to dine on the unusual foods, which he washed down with some Johnnie Walker whisky and Bordeaux wine.

He told The Sun newspaper: "There were a lot of strange requests. Snake was one. They got someone else to cook that. I only work with seafood.

"Hippopotamus was very good and tasted like chicken. He wanted to eat spiders one day."

What's more, Kenji claims that despite making regular military threats and amassing a huge army, the despot loved peace-loving band The Beatles and took protein supplements in a bid to look like Hollywood action man Jean-Claude Van Damme.

He added: "He started buying fitness equipment and taking protein supplements. He watched foreign movies a lot and is a big fan of The Beatles."
