However the airline has revealed that books are the item most commonly left behind on its aircraft, with an average of 12,000 found every year.

Virgin Atlantic recovers around 10,500 pairs of glasses and 5,000 mobile phones on planes per annum.

Even celebrities are not immune to losing their property - a wheelchair used by Kevin McHale, who plays Artie in Glee, was found on board and returned to its owner.
