A US man was stunned when his nine-year-old son received a summons for jury duty.

Robby Clark couldn't believe it when his boy Jacob was sent a letter asking him to appear in Orleans District Court, and the youngster didn't even know what jury duty was until his father explained.

He said: "I was like, 'What's a jury duty?'"

But Jacob's grandmother Deborah Clark revealed the state agency had typed his birth year in as 1982 instead of 2002, and the mistake has now been corrected.

Massachusetts Jury Commissioner Pamela Wood said summoning a child for jury duty "doesn’t happen that often", adding: "We hear about it once or twice a year."
