A seven-year-old boy has found four partially decomposed fingers in a jar.

The youngster made the discovery while playing behind the gym of his school in Chilly-Mazarin, just south of Paris, when he saw the container - which possessed the digits preserved in alcohol - sticking out of the ground.

A police spokeswoman said: "With time the jar must have risen to the surface and the fingers were found in well-preserved condition."

The digits are thought to belong to a carpenter who lost four fingers in a work accident 30 years ago.
