Tipperary Hurling Allstar John Leahy has had his worst fears realised.
A specialist in Waterford's Regional Hospital has diagnosed a ruptured cruciate knee ligament.
Leahy's hurling future now hangs in the balance having undergone reconstructive surgery this afternoon to repair damage from Sunday's Guinness Munster Hurling semi-final clash with Clare.
The 32-year-old fell awkwardly having contested a high ball with Clare's full-back Brian Lohan and was stretchered off.
He had just been on the field for two minutes.
Leahy had undergone initial tests on Tuesday but due to swelling, the full extent of the damage was not known.
His absence will be a severe blow to the Premier county's chances of a Munster and All-Ireland championship.
It also calls into question whether Leahy will be able to return to the game.
