Zimbabwe suspends aid operations

Aid groups must stop their field work in Zimbabwe, the country’s social welfare minister said tonight.
Nicholas Goche said in a memorandum sent to aid groups that he has learned that they are violating the terms of their agreement with the government.
He did not elaborated in the brief statement.
He added that all aid and development groups were ordered to “suspend all field operations until further notice.”
Earlier this week, the aid organisation Care International said it had been ordered to halt operations pending an investigation of allegations it has been campaigning for the opposition ahead of a June 27 presidential run-off.
CARE denies the allegation.
Millions of Zimbabweans depend on international groups for food and other aid as the economy crumbles.
Human Rights Watch yesterday accused the government of imposing control over food aid to intimidate voters before the forthcoming run-off between Robert Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai.
