White House announces Donald Trump's first trip to Europe as president

Donald Trump's first foreign trip is expected to be a meeting with Nato chiefs in Brussels.

The US president's press secretary Sean Spicer said Mr Trump would travel to Belgium on May 25 for the meeting of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation heads of state.

Nato secretary general Jens Stoltenberg announced the meeting on Tuesday.

Mr Spicer said the president was looking forward to meeting his Nato counterparts "to reaffirm our strong commitment to Nato and to discuss issues critical to the alliance, especially allied responsibility-sharing and Nato's role in the fight against terrorism".

Mr Stoltenberg will visit the White House on April 12.

During his election campaign Mr Trump accused Nato of being "obsolete" and criticised Brussels, equating it to "like living in a hell hole right now".
