Coach carrying group of school pupils crashes in France

A coach carrying a group of British school pupils has crashed in France near the Swiss border.

The bus, carrying teenagers from Cheltenham Bournside School, came off the road on the A39 motorway at Lons-le-Saunier.

Fifteen people have been injured, two of them seriously, according to local reports.

A spokesman for the UK's Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT) said there were 48 people on board the coach, which set off from the UK yesterday.

Operated by Caernarfon-based Express Motors, he said there were two drivers and they were on their way to Italy for a week's camping trip.

It had initially been thought the pupils were from Wales as well, but the CPT spokesman confirmed they were from the Gloucestershire school and sixth form centre.

He said they were waiting for confirmation from the company about those injured and whether the trip would be continuing.

A British Foreign Office spokesman said: "We are providing support to a group of British nationals following a coach crash in France. We are in contact with the relevant local authorities."

Twitter account Infos Francaises posted: "Serious accident a bus carrying children on A39."

The same account posted that 15 people had been injured, two of them seriously.
