Two free online courses about the history and lasting legacy of the Holocaust are being launched today.

Students taking the “MOOCs” – massive open online courses – will track the history of the Holocaust from the emergence of Nazi ideology through to the concentration camps and the Final Solution as well as learning about memorial projects around the world.

The programmes have been created by Tel Aviv University with Yad Vashem’s International School for Holocaust Studies in Jerusalem and will be run through the FutureLearn website.

Each course will last three weeks and is open to anyone with access to the internet.

Among the topics expected to be discussed are the effect the day-to-day reality of the concentration camps had on the human mind and spirit and how the Holocaust will be remembered after the last survivor dies.

Different types of historical evidence such as diaries, official documents, news reports, films and other depictions of the Holocaust will be used to teach students how to research history and the challenges of analysing different sources.

Mark Lester of FutureLearn said: “As the world reaches the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camps and the number of living survivors decreases, it becomes of the utmost importance that the lessons of this turning point in history are kept alive.

“Massive open online courses have emerged as an important means of reaching thousands of learners around the world with the highest quality learning material on a range of topical issues.”

Students can sign up now for the first course, which will start on April 20.
