VIDEO: Russian jet 'shot down over Turkey', says Defence Ministry

Latest: Turkey says it warned the Russian jet several times before shooting it down.

The Russian Defence Ministry has said that a Russian jet has been shot down over Turkey near the Syrian border, Russian news agencies have reported.

Turkey says it warned the Russian jet several times before shooting it down.

Earlier this morning, the Dogan news agency, quoting unnamed military officials, said the plane was shot down and crashed into Syrian territory close to the border with Turkey.

It is believed the plane’s pilots ejected by parachute.

Rami Abdurrahman, who heads the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said the warplane crashed in the Turkomen Mountains region in the coastal province of Latakia.

Last month, Turkish jets shot down an unidentified drone that had also violated Turkey’s airspace.
