The US still believes that Europe is at grave risk from a terrorist attack, a government official warned today.

US State Department counter-terrorism co-ordinator Daniel Benjamin said the terror plot remained active and a travel alert will stay in force.

Earlier this month the department advised American citizens living or travelling in Europe to take more precautions for their personal security, following reports that terrorists may be plotting attacks.

Concerns have centred around a plot using assault weapons on public places similar to the 2008 Mumbai massacre.

Mr Benjamin said in London: “We don’t view the conditions as warranting us rescinding the (travel) alert.”
