US priest leaves prison after appeal against sex-abuse cover-up conviction

A Roman Catholic priest who won an appeal against his landmark conviction in the church sex abuse scandal has left a Pennsylvania prison after 18 months behind bars.

Monsignor William Lynn, 62, left the prison in Waymart and was taken to a city jail, where he will be fitted with an electronic tag before being released.

He was the first US church official charged for hiding child abuse complaints, for which he was the point person in Philadelphia from 1992-2004.

Prosecutors charged him with felony child endangerment but the appeal court said the law at the time did not cover people who did not supervise children directly.
