US in talks with China over Syria

US President Barack Obama (left) poses with President Hu Jintao of China (right) and other G20 world leaders

US President Barack Obama has said he hopes he and President Hu Jintao of China can find a “co-operative approach” to end the bloodshed in Syria.

Mr Obama was meeting with Mr Hu on the sidelines of a G20 summit.

Mr Obama’s meeting with Mr Hu followed one on Monday with President Vladimir Putin of Russia, at which Syria was a leading subject.

China and Russia have close ties to Syria and have vetoed two United Nations resolutions that mentioned the threat of sanctions against the regime of President Bashar Assad.

China and Russia, however, did support an observer mission in Syria and a six-point plan by special envoy Kofi Annan.

Mr Hu, standing with Mr Obama at the start of their meeting, said China will work to “appropriately handle” disagreements and sensitive issues.

Mr Hu did not mention Syria specifically.
