Twenty-eight hurt as bus and cars crash on motorway

Almost 30 people have been taken to hospital following a five-vehicle motorway crash in Wales.

A bus and four other vehicles were involved in the collision on the eastbound M4 between junctions 34 and 33 to the west of Cardiff, South Wales Police said.

A total of 28 casualties were taken to the University Hospital of Wales, Royal Glamorgan and Princess of Wales hospitals either by road or air ambulance.

Most of these were classed as walking wounded and, while six of them suffered more serious injuries, none are believed to be life threatening or life changing.

The bus is understood to have been taking people from the Bridgend area to Cardiff to see a show, police said.

A further collision occurred in the westbound carriageway at the same location a few minutes later when a vehicle towing another overturned, but there were no injuries in this incident.

There were delays in both directions as the collisions were dealt with, police said. A police spokeswoman described the delays as “chaotic”.

Meanwhile, a spokeswoman for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said that a number of the casualties on the bus were elderly.

Firefighter Lee Morley told the BBC he was driving westbound when he saw the crash happen.

He said: “All of a sudden I saw on the other side (of the road) a lot of queuing stationary traffic to go up to the sliproad.

“Then the minibus went into the back of a car, the car then went into the back of a Range Rover and that then went into another car, which spun out and scrunched.”

He said he pulled over and jumped over the barrier, and found a woman in the car that spun out was “breathing but unconscious”, adding: “But I got her to come round by talking to her and doing what I’m trained to do.”

He described it as “crazy and surreal”, adding that the bus was “full of pensioners”.
