Three arrests have been made after a bank evicted a former cancer patient in a legal dispute over his mortgage.

Eviction proceedings to remove Tom Crawford started today with dozens of police officers deployed to the scene to prevent a breach of the peace.

The action follows a dispute between Mr Crawford and Bradford and Bingley over an endowment mortgage covering his home in Nottingham.

The bank said repossession was “a last resort” after they were unable to resolve the row, which started in 2012.

Bailiffs have previously been twice prevented from evicting Mr Crawford after hundreds of strangers descended on his street in a bid to stop the process, most recently in January.

Nottinghamshire Police said three people had been arrested at the scene after protesters again gathered to try to intervene.

Mr Crawford, who is in his 60s, is not believed to be among those who have been detained.

A Bradford and Bingley spokesman said: “Repossession is always viewed as a last resort and follows a series of forbearance options, with the aim of finding a solution that takes account of the customer’s specific circumstances.

“Regrettably, in this instance, we have been unable to find a solution.

“The court has ruled that the Crawford’s appeal did not have any prospects of success.

“Bradford and Bingley has followed proper legal procedure and we have an enforceable possession order for the property.”

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said: “A civil process is being carried out at an address in Nottingham and we are in attendance to prevent any breach of the peace.”
