At least 10 civilians were killed when a suicide bomber on a motorbike targeted a local tribal leader near a park in eastern Kunar province, an Afghan official has said.
Tribal leader Khan Jan was among those killed, according to General Abdul Habib Sayedkhaili, provincial police chief in Kunar.
Mr Jan was a vocal public opponent of the Taliban and was leading a local uprising against Taliban fighters in his area in the Dangam district.
Forty other civilians were wounded in the attack in the provincial capital Asadabad, said Gen Sayedkhaili.
A statement from the Afghan interior ministry condemned the attack, calling it "an act against humanity". The statement set the death toll at 11.
No group has yet claimed responsibility but several provincial officials blamed Taliban insurgents because of Mr Jan's vocal opposition to the Islamic militant group.
