Syrian consul quits over Houla killings

A scene purported to be from the Houla massacre.

A Syrian honorary consul in the US has resigned in protest after last week's killings in Houla, where more than 100 people were slaughtered in a massacre blamed on pro-government forces.

The resignation comes as several countries expelled Syrian envoys in protest at the spiraling violence of the 14-month government crackdown.

Hazem Chehabi said he had reached a tipping point and he felt his inaction was"ethically and morally unacceptable".

It is now estimated that more than 13,000 people have been killed, since the uprising began in March of last year.

Meanwhile, armed rebels have given Syria's regime until midday tomorrow to observe a ceasefire, warning they will take "courageous decisions" if the deadline is not met.
