Swiss agree to extradite ex-Fifa official to US

Switzerland’s justice ministry has granted a US request to extradite a former assistant to Concacaf president Jeffrey Webb in the Fifa bribery case.

Costas Takkas, the former general secretary of the Cayman Islands Football Association, was among seven officials arrested on May 27 in a dawn raid at a luxury hotel in Zurich, two days before the Fifa presidential election.

Takkas, who has joint British and Greek nationality, is accused of accepting bribes in exchange for awarding marketing contracts.

The Swiss ministry said: “Takkas massively influenced the competitive situation and distorted the market for media rights in connection with the World Cup qualifying matches.”

He can appeal against the extradition order at Switzerland’s federal criminal court within 30 days.

Webb was also indicted by the US and he is already there after agreeing to be extradited.

The decision came amid turmoil at Fifa as the organisation's ethics committee handed 90-day provisional bans to president Sepp Blatter as well as Uefa chief Michel Platini.
