At least 10 people have been killed in a suspected suicide attack at a political rally in north-west Pakistan, police said today.

Regional police chief Qazi Mohammad Jamil told Geo television the attack in Lower Dir district also left about 30 people injured.

A spokesman for the Awami National Party, Zahid Khan, said members of his party were celebrating the recent decision to change the name of North West Frontier Province when the attack occurred.

Pakistani state television said hundreds of people were participating in the rally in the town of Timergarah.
