St Ledger: Lack of atmosphere in Paris will help us

12/11/2009 - 09:57:35
Republic of Ireland defender Sean St Ledger has said that the lack of atmosphere at the Stade de France will give the ‘Boys in Green’ an advantage in the World Cup play-offs.

The Middlesbrough defender said that some of the French players at his club have told him that the atmosphere at France’s national stadium is not always great.

St Ledger said: “They said that they seem to find a lot of tourists go to the games and it seems to be the case at Wembley as well. You tend to find that people go for the day out rather than the actual football fans going.

“Obviously at Croker the atmosphere against Italy was amazing and I am sure the noise will be double that.”

St Ledger spoke about his mixed feelings on the recent Italy game at Croke Park in which he thought, for a few minutes, that he had scored the winner against the World champions.

“I don’t think I had time to enjoy it (the goal), I was concentrating on keeping the Italians out and I just wanted the game to end.

“Obviously they scored so quickly, but I can look back at it in the years to come and it will stand out as being a great moment for me and my family. It was my dad’s birthday, so it was just meant to be.

“It was disappointing to concede late on, in the changing room it felt like a loss rather than us drawing against the World champions.”
