Spector appeals murder conviction as health deteriorates

Phil Spector has filed another appeal for his murder conviction.

The 74-year-old music producer is serving a 19-year sentence for the second-degree murder of actress Lana Clarkson and his legal team have filed a motion asking for a review of his conviction after his health declined.

According to the 'River Deep, Mountain High' hitmaker's lawyer Charles Sevilla, Spector was recently rushed to hospital from his cell at California's Corcoran State Prison after taking a turn for the worse.

The lawyer told National Enquirer magazine: "He was taken to the hospital this week. In fact, he was rushed.

"It's bad. He's in frail health with a host of very serious problems."

Specific details of the songwriter's problems were not given, but the lawyer noted he has grown increasingly frail since being incarcerated in 2003.

He added: "They don't rush you to the hospital when you're in a prison hospital unless it's serious.

"He wasn't in the best of health going in and, needless to say, it hasn't gotten better over the years."

Clarkson died in Spector's California home in February 2003 by a gunshot in the mouth.

Defence lawyers insisted her death was a suicide, and the case was declared a mistrial in 2007, and the Spector - who pioneered the Wall of Sound production method - was eventually found guilty two years later.

He has previously had appeal attempts rejected.

The new appeal remains pending.
