Indian police have arrested 10 people and charged six of them with allegedly gang-raping a 21-year-old woman on Christmas Eve in southern India, in another case of sexual assault of women in the country.
The arrests were made after the woman complained that she was abducted and raped while visiting a friend in Karaikal, a port city in Pondicherry state.
Officer Monika Bharadwaj said today that the woman has been taken to hospital, but that she did not suffer serious injuries. Police also detained a juvenile male in connection with the incident.
The assault came days after India marked the first anniversary of the fatal gang rape of 23-year-old Jyoti Singh on a moving bus in New Delhi that triggered nationwide protests.
