Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg has paid a moving tribute to her husband of 11 years Dave Goldberg, after his tragic death while on holiday with her in Mexico.
A person close to the family said Mr Goldberg suffered a massive, fatal head injury while exercising at a gym in the resort.
Mr Goldberg left his room at about 4pm to exercise and family members went to look for him after he did not return, a Mexican state official said. He was found at about 6.30pm in one of the resort’s gyms lying by a treadmill in a pool of blood from a blow to the lower back of his head.
He apparently slipped on the treadmill and hit the machine, said the official. The cause of death was severe head trauma and bleeding.
In a facebook post overnight, Sheryl Sandberg said: "We had 11 truly joyful years of the deepest love, happiest marriage, and truest partnership that I could imagine... He gave me the experience of being deeply understood, truly supported and completely and utterly loved – and I will carry that with me always.
"Dave was my rock. When I got upset, he stayed calm. When I was worried, he said it would be ok. When I wasn’t sure what to do, he figured it out."
"Most importantly, he gave me the two most amazing children in the world.
"11 years of being Dave Goldberg’s wife, and 10 years of being a parent with him is perhaps more luck and more happiness than I could have ever imagined. I am grateful for every minute we had.
"As we put the love of my life to rest today, we buried only his body. His spirit, his soul, his amazing ability to give is still with us... Things will never be the same – but the world is better for the years my beloved husband lived."
