Several arrested in Brazil over Olympic terror attack fears

Police in Brazil have detained 10 people said to have pledged allegiance to Islamic State amid fears they were planning an attack on the Rio Olympics.

Justice minister Alexandre de Moraes said the detention of 12 people who pledged their support to IS via social media had been ordered, and two of them are still being hunted.

Mr Moraes said police acted because the group had been discussing the use of weapons to potentially launch an attack during the Games, which begin on August 5.

The arrests were made in the southern states of Sao Paulo and Parana.

Mr Moraes said there was no specific target for an attack.

Last week, a top military aide in Brazil said concerns about terrorism had "reached a higher level" after the Bastille Day attack in Nice.
