Scientists call for exotic-pets ban

Scientists are calling for a ban on exotic pet markets across the EU.
An independent report commissioned by European animal welfare groups raises serious concerns in relation to animal welfare, public health and bio-diversity.
The scientists investigated amphibian and reptile markets across Europe and found conditions that were "tantamount to animal abuse".
The report also highlights health risks to children in particular, as exotic animals carry germs that could spread to humans, causing infection.
The report will be presented to the European Commission, which is considering measures to address the introduction of exotic species to local ecosystems.
