Portugal has driest January for a century
01/02/2005 - 16:15:18Lisbon recorded its driest January in more than a century as drought conditions gripped parts of Portugal, officials said today.
The capital had no rainfall in January for the first time since 1901, said Aderito Serrao, the president of the National Meteorological Institute.
Nationwide, rainfall was less than 20% of the January average, he said.
Four months of mostly dry, sunny weather have brought severe drought conditions to parts of central and southern Portugal, draining reservoirs and parching farmland.
Authorities say they are monitoring reservoir levels but currently have no plans to introduce water rationing.
