Cardinal Sean Brady and Archbishop Diarmuid Martin told their colleagues today that the Pope was "very upset" to hear the details of the Ryan Report.

The two senior church men briefed the pontiff last week on the report into the widespread abuse of children in state institutions run by religious orders.

The cardinal and archbishop told a meeting of their fellow bishops in Maynooth that Pope Benedict had urged them to find out the truth of what happened, to take steps to prevent any repeat of such abuse and to ensure the victims got justice.
