Police seize explosives in northern Spain

10/04/2005 - 12:51:13
Spanish police seized explosives allegedly belonging to the armed Basque separatist group ETA following a search today in the northern town of Hernani.

Police made the discovery during a raid prompted by the arrest of a three-member commando unit of ETA on March 25 as well as the detention of a woman last Friday, said an Interior Ministry spokeswoman who asked not to be named.

According to press reports, the explosives were found in a garage. The Interior Ministry said it would release further details later.

ETA stands for Basque Homeland and Freedom in the Basque language.

The group has been fighting since the late 1960s for an independent Basque homeland in a region that straddles northern Spain and southwest France.

ETA has claimed responsibility for more than 800 killings since then.
